Job Summary
The Special Education School Teacher is responsible for implementing the school’s instructional program for Grades K through 12.
Principal Accountabilities
(Typical duties include the following, although specific duties vary by assignment or contract.)
- Assess students’ skills to determine their needs and to develop teaching plans
- Adapt lessons to meet the needs of students
- Maintains a classroom environment conducive to learning while teaching assigned subject or class according to adopted curricula and standards.
- Track Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) for students who have reasonable accommodation needs.
- Plan, organize, and assign activities that are specific to each student’s abilities
- Implement IEPs, assess students’ performance, and track their progress
- Update IEPs throughout the school year to reflect students’ progress and goals
- Discuss student’s progress with parents, teachers, counselors, and administrators
- Supervise and mentor teacher assistants who work with students with disabilities
- Prepare and help students transition from grade to grade and after graduation
- Maintains communication concerning individual progress with parents and school administration.
- Corrects assignments and evaluates student progress in timely fashion.
- Maintains a classroom environment conducive to learning while teaching assigned subject or class according to adopted curricula and standards.
- Establishes a daily lesson plan following curriculum guidelines and adopted standards; prepares necessary materials; implements plan.
- Maintains student discipline and fosters positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Utilizes motivational tools and information technology to stimulate students.
- Maintains communication concerning individual progress with parents and school administration.
- Contributes to curriculum development and revision.
- Corrects assignments and evaluates student progress in timely fashion.
- Must participate in professional development activities as necessary to maintain licensure.
- Instruction in the classroom will be commensurate with the school’s stated philosophy, objectives and purposes.
- Provides guidance and advice to students on educational matters and on his/her further education and future careers; providing information on sources of more expert advice.
- Communicates and works with other members of the school staff and parents/guardians to ensure the best interest of students.
- Reviews and evaluates teaching and learning strategies, methodologies and programs to ensure the lessons are in line with the curriculum guidelines
- Ensures high standards of professional practice and quality of teaching and learning of the subject(s).
- Cognizant of all rules and regulations in school handbooks.
- Performs other related duties as assigned.
Knowledge & Skills
- Requires initiative, perception and a broad knowledge of human behavior to understand the learning style of the individual students.
- Requires solid pedagogy in educational planning, instructional delivery, classroom management, and assessment.
- Communication skills: discuss student’s needs and performances with general education teachers, parents, and administrators.
- Critical Thinking Skills: assess students’ progress and use that information to adapt lessons to help them learn.
- Patience. Working with students with special needs and different abilities can be difficult. Special education teachers should be patient with each student, as some may need the instruction given aloud, at a slower pace, or in writing.
Experience & Education
- Two (2) to five (5) years’ experience teaching in an accredited school system; three (3) years special education in an accredited school system preferred.
- Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution in a related discipline required; Masters degree preferred.
- Current teacher certification in one of the 50 United States for grade level or subject area.
- Additional endorsement to augment major certification area is desired.
- Advance placement certification preferred as applicable.
Physical Requirements/Working Environment
- Position requires moderate lifting and bending.
- Required to monitor students indoors and sometimes outdoors in a hot and humid climate.
Travel
- Occasional stateside travel.
