Job Summary

The Lead Stevedore oversees all the operational activities in loading and unloading of ship’s cargo to ensure proper handling, safety, and security


Principal Accountabilities

(Typical duties include the following, although specific duties vary by assignment or contract.)

  • Ensures proper instructions regarding load out, discharge and equipment are given to Stevedore
  • Works with Terminal and Stevedores to ensure productive, efficient and quality operations
  • Works closely with Logistics Teams to aid in efficient flow of cargo to and from the Terminal
  • Learns to support profitability goals through effective and efficient workforce management
  • Develops an understanding of, complies with, and implements area accident prevent/safety and workers’ compensation procedures
  • Provides training sessions and on-going feedback to the workforce
  • Keeps senior management informed of work status and problems as they arise
  • Understands and accurately develops operational schedules, production, safety, and other reports and submits on a timely basis with corrective actions and planning
  • Develops understanding of operational procedures and systems. In time, provides ideas and feedback for improvement of procedures
  • Performs other responsibilities as assigned

Knowledge & Skills

  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office software:  Excel, Word, Outlook
  • Thorough knowledge of principles of terminal operations and stevedore operations for break bulk and/or container vessels
  • Knowledge and understanding of cargo stowage restrictions with regards to hazardous cargo and stability considerations of vessels
  • Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations and related industry governmental regulations
  • Understanding of the gear, equipment and gang make-up required for multiple commodities
  • Ability to make critical decisions in an ambiguous environment, under stressful conditions
  • Good verbal and written communication skills
  • Good organizational and multi-tasking skills

Experience & Education

  • High School diploma or equivalent required; Bachelor’s degree in Maritime operations or related field preferred
  • Minimum of four (4) years of related experience
  • Valid state issues driver’s license, and clean DMV record
  • Prior supervisory experience preferred
  • Experience with computerized operating systems

Physical Requirements/Working Environment

  • Must be able to stand, climb, stoop, crawl and kneel for long periods of time and endure working outside on a daily basis often in inclement weather
  • Must be prepared to be called out at all hours
  • Living and working conditions at the assignment location could be remote and uncomfortable
  • Long hours, exposure to weather and hazardous conditions
  • Personnel should be aware of moving on short notice and under adverse conditions
