Job Summary

The Fire Prevention Assistant Chief assists in providing safe and efficient coordination, direction, planning, delivery, support, and public fire safety education functions of Fire Prevention programs in assigned area of responsibility.


Principal Accountabilities

(Typical duties include the following, although specific duties vary by assignment or contract.)

  • Manage, coordinate, and evaluate personnel with respect to Fire Prevention activities
  • Prepare written correspondence to communicate fire protection, prevention, and public education practices so that correspondence is concise, accurately interprets applicable codes and standards, and is appropriate for intended audience
  • Secure compliance with fire prevention codes, laws, and standards through plan reviews, inspections, and code enforcement
  • Design and implement public fire safety education programs and classes
  • Establish policies and procedures to enforce NFPA, DOD instruction, applicable regulations, and leadership directives
  • Interpret Uniform Fire Code and Standards as adopted by the area of responsibility and answer inquiries concerning them
  • Check site, building, fire suppression, fire notification, and specialized plans for compliance
  • Respond to complaints regarding fire code violations and fire hazards
  • Become familiar with applicable host nation and military environmental regulations
  • Perform other duties as assigned

Knowledge & Skills

  • Must fluently read, write, speak, and understand English in order to read, interpret, and explain codes, plans, specifications, blueprints, determine noncompliance, and provide training
  • Excellent leadership, management, and organizational skills
  • Advanced working knowledge of fire protection and prevention methods, rescue procedures, and safety procedures
  • Knowledge of NFPA, DODI, OSHA, and UFC standards, criterion, and hydraulics as they apply to DOD contingency operations and fire prevention code enforcement
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint

Experience & Education

  • Minimum ten (10) years experience in Fire Emergency Services with at least two (2) years as Assistant Fire Chief or higher
  • Bachelor Degree in associated discipline; may substitute two (2) years experience in related field for each year of college
  • DOD, IFSAC, or National Pro-Board Certifications as Fire Officer III, Fire Inspector III, Fire Instructor II, HazMat Incident Commander
  • Prefer Certification as Airport Fire Fighter

Physical Requirements/Working Environment

  • Living and working conditions at assignment location could be remote and uncomfortable
  • Long hours, exposure to weather and hazardous conditions
  • Personnel should be aware of moving on short notice and under adverse conditions
